Our biotech client seeks an exceptional visionary for this key role, with broad responsibilities for formulating and executing the Clinical R&D strategy for the company to pursue the development of novel therapies for Neuroscience conditions. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Medical Officer will support this mission by building and leading the Clinical Development R&D functions and inspiring the team to develop effective and safe therapies that will transform the lives of patients. This person will be responsible for implementing all medically related programs internally and for representing product candidates externally to key stakeholders. The Chief Medical Officer will draw on their extensive experience, strong leadership, roll up your sleeves mentality, and organizational skills to develop and implement the global development strategy for the company’s novel science, integrating research and commercial insights.

The Chief Medical Officer must possess outstanding communication skills as they will interface with all parts of the company. They must truly believe in the power of a great culture, as this is a significant focus of the entire company. They must work productively with cross-functional teams, external consultants, CROs, investors, licensing partners, and health/regulatory authorities to develop strategies to support the development, registration, reimbursement, and commercialization of products that bring significant benefit to patients. The successful candidate will take the utmost care to recruit, build and nurture a high performing team capable of meeting key development and corporate milestones within agreed upon timelines and budgets.

Major tasks and responsibilities include:
  • Help shape corporate strategy for the company’s pursuit of developing novel neuroscience and other related therapies
  • Play a key role in advancing corporate vision/strategy and executing on mission critical goals in a highly collaborative manner
  • Develop the overarching clinical development blueprint for the company
  • Collaborate effectively with the Chief Scientific Officer and Discovery team to advance key drug candidates through IND and into early clinical development
  • Expand clinical team to shepherd the company’s science into the hands of the patients who need it
  • Oversee the analysis and interpretation of clinical trial data and the reporting of clinical trial results
  • Lead interactions with academic thought leaders, investigators, cooperative groups, patient advocacy groups, and other clinical stakeholders
  • Maintain understanding of the clinical and scientific developments in the relevant scientific areas by attending key scientific meetings and tracking the literature
  • Represent the company and its programs to external audiences, including the investment, medical and academic communities, as well as pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry collaborators/partners
  • As a key member of the Executive Team, collaborate with executive leaders in developing overall company strategy, meeting business objectives, and attracting, leading, and developing the overall team
  • Serve as an advocate and champion for patients
  • Drive internal and external collaboration by continually seeking and implementing innovative solutions; create a culture that thrives on progress and results

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:
  • Medical degree required with 10+ years of experience in neurology drug development
  • 10+ years of pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry experience advancing novel treatments
  • Proven track record filing and winning NDA or BLA approvals for novel therapies
  • Mix of biotech and large pharmaceutical company experience highly preferred
  • Must have experience managing and directly leading R&D teams. Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; should have proven skills as an effective team player/leader who can instill credibility and confidence within and outside the; must have outstanding executive presence
  • Expertise with small molecules is preferred
  • Track record of defining and delivering on an innovative R&D strategy that has yielded critical drug development milestones
  • Strategic awareness in clinical development necessary to prioritize product development opportunities to achieve the business goals of the company
  • Possess excellent communication skills with a track record of articulating the company’s clinical development and regulatory vision to a wide audience including the CEO, the Board of Directors, employees, and external community
  • Must be science- and data-driven and have the highest personal values and ethical standards
  • Patient-centric mindset
  • Desire to take a hands-on approach in advancing the portfolio
